Hi, I’m the guy that’s been told all his life, with that voice you should be in radio! I did, eventually 🙂
I was born in Charlotte, NC and moved to California at a young age and got my first taste of show biz in Junior High School through a TV Broadcasting class that produced a weekly news program on the local PBS Station KCET.
I started by doing the sports segment and interviewed Connie Hawkins. The show later evolved in to News and Entertainment and I had the opportunity to interview local news legend Jerry Dunphy . Jerry besides anchoring local news, had his own show called “Jerry’s Calling” where he would visit with celebrities at their homes. I stole his idea and interviewed him at his home. Jerry also appeared in more than 20 movies including Independence Day (yes, the one with Will Smith – “You gotta come down here with an attitude, actin’ all big and bad…”). I also got to interview what was probably the inspiration for Elvira – Moona Lisa. Talk about ragin hormones in a junior high school kid! The most memorable interview ever was with voice legend Mel Blanc, a gracious, kind, gentle, and genuinely funny guy.
Later, the family moved to Oklahoma and after a typical teenage life, I enlisted in the United States Navy. I was an Operations Specialist. Which is a misnomer, it should be an Operations Generalist. We did so much of everything. I worked in CIC which to the uninitiated is the Combat Information Center. Being initiated, I knew it meant – Christ, I’m Confused! Again, my voice came into play. I started by doing Air Traffic Control while on shore duty, so when they sent me to commission the USS Nassau LHA-4, I and my voice got to go to Air Intercept Control School. No longer was I keeping them apart, I was running them together.
After the Navy, I returned to Oklahoma. I became involved with a non profit organizati0n called Bikers Against Child Abuse. During my time with them I created an internet radio program called BACA Nation. Along with “Caveman” and I (Guru) did this show that was surprisingly popular. We mixed stupid humor, crazy news, indie music along with awareness of child abuse and the help that Bikers Against Child Abuse could bring folks. It caught the attention of a wealthy benefactor who financed a studio and for five years we did a show syndicated in the US and Australia. During that time I had the opportunity to interview Collin Raye, Charlie Daniels, David Draiman, Mark Farner, Bryan Basset, and I’ve been on stage with Kansas and .38 Special.
On the Video Commercial page you’ll see a tv spots that we did while promoting the show. This is all while keeping my “real job”.
I’ve been around, and think I can find the sound that you’re looking for!
Randy
